4 Plumbing Tips for a Stress-Free Thanksgiving

Prepare Your Plumbing for Thanksgiving

The holiday season is just around the corner, and while you’re probably spending time preparing your turkey and fixings, you should also take a few moments to ensure your plumbing is ready. Follow these four simple tips to keep your Thanksgiving stress-free!

1. Don’t Throw Everything Down the Garbage Disposal

While your garbage disposal is a useful appliance, it’s not the end-all for your Thanksgiving leftovers. Remember that these foods and substances can severely clog or break your unit, causing sink backflows and expensive plumbing repairs:

  • Grease or oil
  • Glass and plastic
  • Large bones
  • String foods such as corn husks or celery

2. Don’t Flush Foreign Objects

If you’re hosting Thanksgiving or having house guests, someone will inevitably break the “nothing but toilet paper down the toilet” rule. Especially if your plumbing fixtures are older, it may be worth it to give your friends and family a friendly reminder — or try posting a sign in your bathroom (who says a sign can’t be part of your decor?). These items should be included on your list to avoid:

  • Paper towels
  • Cotton balls
  • Makeup wipes and cleansing pads
  • Flushable wipes (yup — they’re not flushable!)

3. Space Out Showers

Thanksgiving is about being grateful and giving thanks — but you’ll also want to give your house guests a chance to each get a hot shower. Try spacing out your baths by waiting at least 15 minutes between uses. This will also allow your drains to clear.

4. Fix Any Current Problems Before the Big Day

Avoid stressing about a  clogged drain or a dishwasher malfunction by fixing them before house guests ring the doorbell.
