How Big of a Problem is PFOA / PFOS?
Perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) and perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS) are chemicals that were manufactured and used in the United States for more than 60 years. You could find them in several household products, including non-stick cookware, cardboard boxes, paints, and some consumer electronics. They haven’t been manufactured in the U.S. since the early 2000s, but they’re still found in many imported items. These include carpeting, rubber, leather, and many, many others.
It’s still unclear how dangerous PFAS and PFOS are since research into their potential risks is just starting. But preliminary results show that extensive exposure to the chemicals could lead to liver problems and growth and development issues in children.
Minnesota has experienced PFAS / PFOS exposure like other areas of the country. It’s particularly prevalent in the Cottage Grove area, which is home to an extensive 3M manufacturing facility. But you’ll find these chemicals in water systems throughout the state. According to the Minneapolis Star-Tribune, PFAS / PFOS have been found in about 66 percent of public water systems that had been tested. You find the PFAS / PFOS levels in your area at PFAS Contamination in the U.S. Map and it has data as recent as June 8, 2022.
The good news is that the vast majority of those samples revealed PFAS / PFOS concentrations below what the state considers acceptable. Those standards are already more strict than national standards. The national recommended level is 70 ppt (parts per trillion), while the Minnesota standard is only 15 ppt for PFOS.
Still, some areas of the state, in addition to Cottage Grove, had levels deemed too high. These include Afton, Lakeland, Lakeland Shores, St. Paul Park, and West Lakeland Township. A spokesperson with the St. Paul Park Public Works Department said that the city’s reading came from a backup city well that it rarely uses. It uses filters for the other two city wells that are used much more often.

Schedule Water TestHow We Can Help
The people who run Minnesota’s municipal water systems work incredibly hard to reduce the amount of all contaminants as much as possible – and they do a fantastic job. But that doesn’t mean you can’t take steps on your own to reduce the chances of PFAS / PFOS entering your home’s water supply.
One thing you can do is to have us install Kinetico’s PFAS-POU filtration system in your home. We can install it where you get most of your drinking water (POU – Point of Use) or where that water comes into your home (POE – Point of Entry). Whichever installation method you prefer, this system will deliver total peace of mind.
