Water 101

How to Tell If You Have Hard Water vs. Soft WaterYou might not know that the vast majority of homes in the U.S. – about 85 percent of them – have hard water. What makes water hard (or soft, for that matter) is the amount of magnesium and calcium it contains.

  • If water has fewer than 17 parts per million (ppm) of those minerals, it’s considered soft.
  • If it has 17-60 ppm, it’s slightly hard.
  • Moderately hard water has 60-120 ppm.
  • Hard water has 120-180 ppm.
  • If it has more than 180 ppm, it’s considered to be “very hard” water.

It’s important to note that hard (and moderately hard) water isn’t hazardous and is not what some would call “contaminated.” It just has an excessive amount of calcium and magnesium. Some people think hard water tastes worse because it has a high mineral content, while others don’t like soft water because it tastes different. So, it’s more a matter of opinion than anything else.

Hard water can be a problem because it can cause issues with water lines. This can make appliances work overtime, like washing machines and refrigerators. Also, if you have an older home with pipes made of galvanized steel, calcium and magnesium deposits can lead to potentially costly clogs.

A home with very hard water could potentially cause health concerns. Ingesting too much magnesium has increased the risk of diarrhea and possibly kidney problems.
