Does Minnesota Water Contain Contaminants?

Does Minnesota water contain contaminants? Unfortunately, despite the best efforts of municipal water systems, the answer is “yes.” But this doesn’t mean you’re helpless when getting rid of those contaminants. Aquarius Water Conditioning has several different water purification products that will give you peace of mind knowing that the water you and your family drink will be safe, clean, and healthy.

Does Minnesota Water Contain Contaminants?

These are just a couple of contaminants our Kinetico line of water purification products can eliminate from your water supply.

Tannins

Some of the more common contaminants in Minnesota drinking water are tannins. These are organic substances that develop when water flows through decaying vegetation. You’ll find tannins in just about every body of water, such as a marsh, a swamp, and more.

The good news is that tannins aren’t harmful to your health. That’s why governmental agencies such as the EPA don’t regulate their concentration in city water supplies. The bad news is that tannins can be frustrating. If, for example, your water has a dull brownish or yellowish tone, it could mean it has an excess of tannins. It can also make your water taste bad, like it came from a swamp. If you notice a tart, earthy taste, that’s another sign tannins are present.

Another issue with tannins is that they can stain things in your home, such as your sinks, tubs, and toilets. They can even lead to brown or yellow stains on your towels and your clothes and sheets after doing a load of laundry.

Again, tannins are typically found in marshy, swampy areas throughout Minnesota. They will typically show up in higher concentrations during the summer because this is when vegetation decays faster. But they can show up at any time of the year.

Arsenic

While tannins don’t pose any risk to human health, the same can’t be said for arsenic. This chemical is used in mining and in treating wood. You can even find it in pesticides. So, it’s not a stretch to imagine how bad it could be for the human body.

Arsenic is typically more of a problem for households with private wells. The chemical leaches from soil and rocks and dissolves in water, often finding its way into your home. Here are some reasons why you don’t want any part of it.

  • Arsenic can increase the risk of breathing and heart problems and may also contribute to cancer development.
  • This chemical is tough to detect because it doesn’t have an odor or taste. The only way to know if you have it in your water supply is through regular testing.
  • According to the Minnesota Department of Health, arsenic has been found in about 40 percent of new wells in Minnesota since 2008.
