Iron In Water

Is your drinking water leaving a bad taste in your mouth? Remove high levels of iron from your water supply with our advanced water systems from Kinetico.

Is Iron in My Drinking Water?

Did you know…Both Minnesota and Wisconsin have iron-rich soil and sediments. That means when it rains, or snow melts, the iron within the soil and rocks seeps into a nearby water supply. Iron can also get into a water supply from the corrosion of steel or iron pipes.

4 Signs of Iron in Water

Change in Taste

Iron in water can significantly affect its flavor and scent, giving it a strong metallic taste. This can also affect the taste of foods and beverages prepared using water.

Change in Color

The color of your drinking and tap water may change to yellow or red. This creates yellow, red, or brown stains on dishes, laundry, and other household appliances, too.

Damage to Household Equipment

When iron accumulates in your water supply, it can clog water-using appliances, including washing machines, dishwashers, and water softeners. This renders your machines less effective and efficient, leading to costly repairs.

Presence of Bacteria

Some bacteria require the presence of iron to survive. Excess iron can cause bacteria growth and even form a sticky biofilm, making it more difficult to treat any bacteria problems you may have.

Is Iron in Water Safe to Drink?

Typically, small amounts of iron in your water do not pose any serious health risks. Iron is an essential nutrient that our bodies need to support healthy red blood cells.

Iron only becomes an issue when your water contains high concentrations of this mineral, causing harmful bacteria to grow in your home’s water supply.

Frequently asked questions

According to the Environmental Protection Agency’s Secondary Drinking Water Standards lists, an iron concentration of 0.3 milligrams per liter and above is considered problematic. This is mostly due to the fact that this concentration is enough to change water’s color and taste, not to mention stain laundry and equipment.

To be clear, this is simply a guideline—not a federal law. So, water with iron concentrations above 0.3 mg/L of iron is not necessarily dangerous to drink. The Minnesota Department of Health, for example, states that concentrations of iron are typically below 10.0 mg/L in drinking water.

If that number sounds too high for your comfort level, Aquarius can help you find a cost-effective water filtration system.

Unlike other contaminants, iron is typically easy to see or taste in water. Check your water for the following signs:

  • It has a metallic taste or smell
  • It’s red, yellow, or brown in color
  • It contains a gelatinous sludge or slime-like presence

Knowing these common signs will help you determine the best water treatment option.

The best way to detect iron and other contaminants in your water supply is to get it tested by a professional. At Aquarius Home Services, we offer free, in-home water testing. This allows our water quality experts to detect water contaminants of all kinds, as well as their concentrations.

Once these issues are diagnosed, we’ll work with you to determine the best water treatment option for you and your family.

Getting rid of iron in water can be tricky business, as there are different types of iron or iron byproducts that can be present.

For example, if your water inspection reveals that there is dissolved ferrous iron present, your water treatment options will be very different from a test result yielding organic iron and tannins instead. Some iron treatment options available include one, or a combination, of the following:

  • Colloidal iron filters
  • Oxidizing iron filters
  • Water softeners
  • Whole-house water treatment system

Fortunately, our water treatment experts help remove the guesswork—and iron—for you. We’ll provide a cost-effective treatment option that ensures your family enjoys clean, great-tasting drinking water in no time!

Iron is one of the well water chemicals that can impact hair color by turning blonde hair to an orangish color.

iron in water can change hair color

Besides turning hair a different color, it can cause other issues for your hair:

  • Hair feels dry, brittle and crunchy.
  • Hair is dull, lacks softness and shine.
  • Hair that is dark to begin with can darken even more.
  • Hair that has been chemically treated (e.g., straightened, permed, or highlighted) can interact with iron in water.
