How Does Hard Water Affect Your Skin?
Hard water – it makes our linens hard and our showers dirty, but did you know it can also affect our health as well? Generally speaking, ingesting hard water doesn’t pose any threat, but showering with it is another story entirely. Our bodies, and our skin in particular, don’t exactly take kindly to hard water minerals, and the after-effects of prolonged use can be pretty darn pesky.
So, what are three ways hard water damages your skin?
- Dryness: The minerals found in hard water make it so it’s more difficult to completely wash away soapy residue in the shower. The result? Irritated, dried out skin that can crack, peel or bleed over time. If it sound painful, that’s because it is! As if that wasn’t bad enough, the film it leaves behind can also compromise your skin’s protection from germs.
- Acne: You may be thinking, “wait a minute… how can dry skin be acne-prone?” Well it can, and it will! When your skin becomes particularly dry, it’s deprived of natural oils. It’s reaction? To overproduce oils, making your skin more susceptible to a breakout.
- Sunburn: We know, it’s not exactly sunshine season in the Wisconsin and Minnesota areas, but that doesn’t mean the sun’s UV rays are harmless. Skin damage from the sun can occur at any time of the year, and hard water can make it worse. Insoluble minerals like magnesium and calcium break down collagen and elastin, leaving your skin more vulnerable to burning.
Have you experienced any of these skin issues in the past? Or perhaps you’d prefer to prevent them in the future. In either case, your best line of defense against hard water and its side effects is always a professionally installed water softener.
