Frequently asked questions
Tannins are natural and organic substances that are synthesized during the fermentation and breakdown of plant matter.
Tannins are known as the component in red wine that gives it its signature tart, acidic flavor, as grapes must undergo fermentation before being turned into wine.
Tannins may be welcome in a nice glass of red wine, but they are less appealing in tap and drinking water. The presence of tannins can indicate the presence of dead and decaying plant matter somewhere along the line of your water supply.
Although tannins can affect the taste and appearance of drinking water, tannins themselves are generally not regarded as toxic.
Unfortunately, the appearance of tannins in your water supply can indicate that your supply may have other problems. Tannins typically reside on surface water but if they are able to travel from surface water into your groundwater source, bacteria, viruses, parasites, and other contaminants can also make that journey.
Tannins themselves may not be harmful to your health, but it is critical that you get your water tested for pathogens and other contamination if tannins are present.
These bacteria, viruses, and parasites, and other sediments can cause major health problems, but they are relatively easy to filter out when they are caught early enough.
A brown or yellowish tint to your drinking water can be indicative of tannins, but this is also a sign of manganese or iron. You can attempt to distinguish the two by filling up a glass of tap water and letting it sit overnight.
If the discoloration or sediments sink to the bottom, your water most likely contains manganese or iron. If the discoloration is still present throughout the entire glass, tannins are a more likely culprit.
If you also notice that your water tastes a bit marshy, earthy, or tart, this can also be a sign of tannins in your water supply. The color and taste that tannins can create in drinking water may be good indicators, but the only way to know for sure what components are present in your water is to have a professional perform a water test.
Aquarius Water Conditioning offers free in-home water tests, allowing us to determine what lingers in your drinking water. From there, we will work with you to create a thorough, complete solution that gets to the root of the problem. The presence of tannins in drinking water is not regulated by government agencies like other contaminants, so it is crucial to get your water tested for tannins and other contaminants on a regular basis.
Fortunately, tannins in your drinking water is a relatively easy problem to fix, but there are multiple routes that can be taken depending upon other factors. For example, the presence of iron and sulfites in addition to tannins may require a different treatment method than water with other issues like hardness and alkalinity.
The experts at Aquarius Water Conditioning have decades of combined experience when it comes to treating water, and our professional team will work with you to determine which solution will work best to give you and your family clean, great-tasting water.
Occasionally, tannins become visible in a water supply when it contains too many other minerals (aka hard water) or is too alkaline. We will work to find the source of these issues and provide quick, cost-effective solutions. We are passionate about helping provide your family with clean, pure, great-tasting water that runs throughout the entire house.
One of the most comprehensive solutions we offer is the Kinetico K5 Drinking Water Station that can have up to nine stages of filtration to clear out 99% of contaminants. This incredible system filters out tannins, iron, manganese, arsenic, and more, yet it is small enough to fit under your sink! It also comes with a 10-year warranty, so you can be sure you will get your money’s worth out of this investment. Kinetico is a trustworthy, American-made company that offers a wide range of products and focuses on sustainability. Their K3 and K1 Water Stations are also notable options for getting rid of tannins, though they have fewer stages of filtration than the K5.
For a complete home solution that covers all fixtures, pipes and faucets you should consider a whole house reverse osmosis system.
